Fun In the Sun Gives A LOT More Than Fun!☀️

Spending time outside at the beach is awesome! But did you know that it is actually good for you too? If you’re looking for another reason to get your feet in the sand, we’ve got you covered!

Those of you that have been to the beach, even once, know how positively it can affect your mood. It’s almost as if something deep in your soul drives you toward the sea at the first thought of it. Science shows that even just the sound of the ocean has a profound effect on our brain. It relieves stress and activates the Prefrontal Cortex – the region associated with self reflection and decision making. This stress relief could be the main reason that over 40% of all humans live near the coast.

Did you know that more than half of the Earth’s oxygen comes from marine photosynthesizers, like plankton and seaweed? Pretty cool, huh?! This oxygen is put into the air when the water moves, such as waves traveling across the top of the water. So if your thoughts are a little lighter and the air feels a little cleaner by the beach – you aren’t imagining it! It actually is fresher and contains more oxygen.

This dose of oxygen rich air is great for your body as oxygen is one of the most vital components in keeping our body thriving and free of disease. It contributes to the healthy function of all our vital organs, especially the brain and the heart. It has even been found that just a quick morning stroll by the beach can help improve cognitive performance throughout the entire day!

Sunlight

While the warnings about too much sun exposure are all true, a healthy dose of sunlight is great for your body! Your body absorbs Vitamin D from the sun, which regulates calcium and phosphate levels in the body. Essentially, it helps keep bones, teeth, and muscles healthy.

Remember to always use caution when spending long periods of time outside, because it’s possible for anyone’s skin to get damaged by the sun, regardless of skin tone.

Sunlight can actually improve your mental health too. Sunlight has been found to increase serotonin levels in the brain. This is the chemical in our brains that makes us feel happy and relaxed. It has such a large impact on mood that low serotonin levels have been linked to anxiety and depression. Countries such as Finland and Norway even offer their citizens Vitamin D tablets because they have a “Polar Night” that lasts all winter.

Just simply being outside can really brighten your mood too. It’s important to take time away from work, screens, and the stress of other commitments once in a while. Surfing, snorkeling, or even just taking a stroll at the beach can help you unwind. Plus, taking in the beauty of the ocean can make anyone appreciate the little things in life!
