Mercy Mats

This week we’re highlighting a charity organization that demonstrates you don’t have to break the bank to make big impact. They’re called Mercy Mats, and they craft recycled plastic bags into blankets, pillows, and much more for the homeless!

HOW DID IT ALL START?

Mercy Mats started when Marjie Schutz was looking for a way to reuse the plastic bags she got when shopping at almost every store. Although now she is using reusable bags, she still wanted to find a better use for the ones being thrown out.

WHY MATS FOR THE HOMELESS?

For starters, not having to breakdown the bags or ship them across oceans to be recycled dramatically cuts down on waste and greenhouse emissions. But, more than that it helps those who have the hardest time helping themselves. PLUS it’s very affordable and effective.

THE GROWTH BEHIND THE MOVEMENT

It’s no surprise that such a simple yet ingenious idea caught on like wildfire. Marjie’s church got involved and helped to create ministries across the USA doing just the same!

THE BIG PICTURE

Changing the world really isn’t rocket science. It just requires caring people to be dedicated!
