Pe’ahi “Jaws” Maui🌊

One of the most ferocious surf spots in the world…

Jaws Overview:

Pe-ahi is a popular surf spot on the northern shore of Maui, Hawaii. This spot earned the name “Jaws” due to the speed and ferocity of its waves, coming in at about 30 mph. Being some of the most powerful in the world, these waves range from 30 to 80 feet on a good day, which is usually in the winter. Jaws only has these huge, breaking waves a few days a year, but when it’s firing, it’s electric for everyone! It’s so popular that typically a large number of spectators turn up to watch the action.

80 foot tall waves?! How does that work? The answer is carefully…and with a little extra help! Jaws is actually known for the introduction of “tow-in” surfing. Tow-in surfing uses a rope connected to a jet ski to help the surfer get in place to catch the wave, since waves like these are too massive to paddle against!

Recommended Experience Level

This surf spot is for professional or experienced surfers only due to the deadly size of the waves, but even if you aren’t ready to surf 70 foot waves, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth a visit! In fact, many people come just to spectate.

Ease of Access

Heads up: there is a large dirt path that leads downhill that is necessary to hike or ride down if you want to spectate Jaws. This trail is about 1.5 miles long and is made of dirt, so it can often be a bit muddy. Make sure to dress accordingly. We suggest taking a 4 wheel drive vehicle down this path. DO NOT take a vehicle without 4 wheel drive down this path because 9 times out of 10 you will get stuck!

What’s Close By

When you’re ready to surf yourself, there are beautiful locations safe for all levels not far away. We recommend Lahaina Reefs, which is about an hour drive from Pe-ahi. Be sure to visit during the winter months for the best waves!
